Early trauma is associated with altered function in neural pathways of the developing brain. Longitudinal research is needed to dissect individual trajectories of risk and resilience following trauma. Separable forms of trauma impact unique neural pathways. Chronic stress may confound studies of trauma, but is also ecologically valid as representative of typical conditions. Understanding of trauma within an integrated brain context will aid discovery.
