We document a global +5% δ13C excursion in the Silurian–Devonian Helderberg Group.
We develop U–Pb ages on 6 Helderberg ashes via CA-ID-TIMS on volcanic zircon.
U–Pb ages include dates on the stratigraphically lowest Devonian ashes yet developed.
We estimate the Silurian–Devonian boundary age to be 421.3±1.2 Ma.
A steady-state model explains the excursion if [DIC] was less than 2× modern levels.
