Nanostructure stabilization in electrodeposited Al-Mg dendrites

Al-Mg dendrites exhibited core-shell type microstructure. The core is made of coarse grains with grain size ∼100 nm. The shell is made of fine grains with grain size ∼16 nm. Grain boundary segregation of Mg is higher in fine regions (ΓMg,fine/ΓMg,coarse>1). Grain boundary energy decreases from coarse to fine, stabilizing nanostructures.
