Porosity effects on crystallization kinetics of amorphous solid water: Implications for cold icy objects in the outer solar system

Amorphous ice films retain a fraction of their initial porosity when heated from 10 K to 130–141 K. Ice crystallization unfolds in two distinct kinetic stages. Nucleation initiates at external interface first, then at internal pore surfaces. Highly porous ices crystallize significantly faster than low-porosity ices. Porosity can reduce crystallization time for Outer Solar System ices.
