POM composition quantified in a coastal area where seasonal mucilage occurs.

Phytoplankton dominated at all seasons, sites and almost depths.

Other contributions were usually moderate (river POM) or negligible (sewage POM).

Sedimentary hydrodynamics likely drove horizontal, vertical and temporal variation.

Mucilaginous material was of autochthonous origin.
