The proportion of bycatch in king scallop dredges varies from 15 to 53% around the British Isles. Bycatch is dominated by commercial species including queen scallop, brown and spider crab. King scallop dredging is unlikely to cause large-scale mortality of individual bycatch species. Discard rates for commercially valuable species vary widely across the English Channel. An area specific approach to managing impacts on bycatch species is required.
