Experimental study of transfer phenomena during drying of paint film under infrared heating. Because of the new European rules concerning pollution emission in the atmosphere, coated films of polymer aqueous solution are intensely used. The current trend is to reduce volatile but pollutant organic solvents. These films are emulsions composed of water used as solvent, polymers, pigments and various chemical components. Infrared heating appears to be an efficient process to dry and reticulate such films. A thin layer of wet polymer, having a uniform water volume fraction, is coated on an opaque substrate. The mixture is a semi- transparent medium subjected to a radiation intensity emitted by an infrared source. Absorption of radiation occurs in the volume of the film. The substrate can also benefit from absorption. During the process, water is evaporated from the surface so that a concentration and temperature gradients are created simultaneously. Thermal losses come from convection and radiation. In this paper, an experimental study on coupled heat and mass transfer mechanisms during drying of paint film is reported. A methodology that enables the identification of heat transfer coefficients has been set up. An experimental method has been founded to identify flux absorbed by the film and the substrate. A residual heat flux has been found which we assign to possible physico-chemical transformations occurring in the film. A creative technique has been found to place accurately microthermocouples (12 μm) inside the film. They will allow measuring temperature gradients within the film.
