We review research on the role of reward function in depression and bipolar disorder.

We address reward sensitivity as a correlate, trait, vulnerability, and course predictor.

We conclude that blunted reward sensitivity is involved in unipolar depression.

Alternatively, heightened reward sensitivity is characteristic of hypomania/mania.

Aberrant reward function is a trait and may provide vulnerability for mood disorders.
