The basics, design, prototype and characterization of a microwave based linear displacement sensor for piston position detection in hydraulic cylinders is presented. This function is important for industrial applications to provide a precise feedback in position controlled hydraulic drives. At present technologies for piston position detection have disadvantages and are cost-intensive. Used technologies are inductive, magnetostrictive, magnetic or mechanical and have the need for design modifications in the cylinder structure, limited robustness and life-time.Microwave technology is established in many fields e.g. communication, traffic radar or air-defence radar. In this paper we describe a minimally invasive and contactless implementation of this technology for hydraulic drives. The development of an industrial sensor has raised new challenges and lead to new sensing concepts. Finally our solutions, designs and test results are presented.
