We investigate the genesis of the Cogne serpentinite-hosted magnetite deposit. Geochemistry and geochronology suggest a subseafloor hydrothermal origin. We propose an analogy with modern ultramafic-hosted seafloor hydrothermal systems. Similar magnetite accumulations may account for observed seafloor magnetic anomalies.
