Sm3+ doped (Ca, Mg, Zr)GGG crystal has been grown by Czochralski technique. Its optical absorption, fluorescence and lifetime were studied. The refractive index and absorption cross-section were calculated. Judd–Ofelt theory was used to calculate the intensity parameters (Ωt), the spontaneous emission probabilities, the branching ratios, electric-dipole line strengths, magnetic-dipole line strengths and the radiative lifetime of the state 4G5/2. The stimulated emission cross-sections at 566, 613, 649, and 709 nm were calculated. The decay curve of the 4G5/2 level of Sm3+ ions with relatively low concentration (0.27 mol/L) was nearly single exponential and the experiment fluorescence lifetime (τexp) was determined.
