Intra-epidermal electrical stimulation has been recently developed to stimulate A¦Ä- and C-fibers selectively and non-invasively. To establish measurement system of pain-related evoked potential (PREP) using intra-epidermal electrical stimulation (IES), we examined 36 healthy controls (18 males; age, 20-70 yrs). The electrical stimulation using IES was applied to the dorsum of hand, wrist and foot. PREPs were recorded from the Cz electrode referenced to the linked earlobes (A1-A2) of the International 10-20 electrode system. A negative wave (N2) was recorded after stimulation to A¦Ä and C fiber in the arm and leg clearly and reproducibly. Stimulation by IES was not painful and tolerable in all the subjects. Age and gender did not significantly affect amplitudes or latency of evoked potentials. IES can be applied in a clinical setting and PREP recordings could be useful to investigate pathophysiology of neuropathic pain.
