During embryogenesis, in order to form the complex neural network found in the functional nervous system, it is essential that axons reach their target correctly. The tip of the growing axon, growth cone, is responsible for navigation. It is thought that collapsin-1 is a repulsive guidance cue. However, the in vivo function of collapsin-1 as a repulsive guidance cue is largely unknown. Then in order to elucidate the in vivo function of collapsin-1, we created collapsin-1 deficient mice. Collapsin-1 homozygous mice showed the difference of phenotypical abnormalities (cardiac defect and mortality) by the difference of the genetic background of mice. Also, collapsin-1 homozygous embryos showed abnormality of neural network.
