Military dogs were studied during a simulated avalanche search mission (SASR).

SASR induced moderate and temporary physiological and behavioural changes in dogs.

Military dogs showed good adaptive capacity to additional potential stressors.

Military dogs carried out high performance search tasks under extreme conditions.

Findings suggested SASR did not compromise military dogs' welfare.
