The excess ZnSe can be eliminated using the sandwich-structured precursor even for the CZTSe films with high (>1.1) Zn/Sn ratios. The presence of excess ZnSe phase on top of the CZTSe thin film can be related to the deterioration of the solar cell properties, especially the lower current density. Modification of the precursor structure improved the cell efficiency from 6% (bilayer precursor) to 9% (sandwich-structured precursor) and is promising for future improvements in the CZTSe cell efficiency.
