A “smart application” leverages on web services from biomedical portals. Smart applications support loosely structured tasks. SSAIIB is a reference framework for designing smart applications in biology. Software agents adaptively support users in exploiting biomedical web resources. An implementation is presented for annotating biomedical texts.
