Coupled measurements of 未18O and 未D of hydration water and salinity of fluid inclusions in gypsum from the Messinian Yesares Member, Sorbas Basin (SE Spain)

A novel method is proposed to test for secondary exchange of gypsum hydration water.

We studied one cycle of gypsum–marl deposition from the Messinian Yesares Member.

We show that gypsum hydration water has retained its original isotopic composition.

All isotope signatures can be reconciled if marine sulfate minerals are recycled.

Results support cyclic evaporite deposition forced by Earth's orbital geometry.
