This study presents headspace Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (HS-FTIR) as a novel approach for the discrimination of plant species, such as the Pandanus species. The application of principal component analysis to the spectral data differentiated not only species, but also cultivars or varieties, which formed distinct but proximate clusters. Headspace FTIR spectroscopy provides a simple, rapid, non-destructive and relatively inexpensive method to discriminate between plant species.
