A controlled level of disorder is introduced in Er3+:Y2SiO5 by codoping with 1% of Sc3+. The optical bandwidth is 25 GHz corresponding to a 50-fold increase compared to samples without Sc3+. Optical homogeneous linewidths of less than 2 kHz are observed. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy shows that electron spin linewidths are also strongly increased. This material can be useful for high-bandwidth classical and quantum information processing in the telecom C-band.
