A hydrometallurgical route for selective sphalerite recovery from ZLRs is proposed. Chemical extraction shows that Zn in ZLRs is bound to sulfates, oxides and ferrites. Hot acidic leaching of Zn from ZLRs follows the shrinking core kinetic model. Selective Zn recovery (as sphalerite) could be achieved by sulfidic precipitation. 41.7, 22.8 and 17.1 mg g−1 of Zn recovered from ZLR1, ZLR2 and ZLR3, respectively.
