Spodumene absorbs microwave energy once heated to critical temperature. Critical temperature of a sample of α-spodumene concentrate was about 634 °C. Critical temperature of β-spodumene concentrate was about 447 °C. Absorption of microwaves leads to rapid temperature rise and localised melting. Similar level of phase conversion required less energy in microwave than in muffle furnace.
