AlNiTiSiB(N) nanostructured/amorphous coatings were deposited on AISI304 stainless steel by sputter PVD in Ar and Ar/N2 plasma. Al-rich coatings were produced, with hardness up to 15 GPa (unusual for such films) and low elastic modulus (from 130 to 180 GPa). Excellent abrasion resistance, comparable to ceramic PVD coatings (such as CrN), was obtained. Such Al-based metallic films offer the potential to replace ‘traditional’ but toxic coatings (e.g. plated Cr, Cd, Ni, or anodizing).
