An assay was developed to group shiga toxin producing Escherichia coli isolates into clinically important serogroups regulated in U.S.

The multiplex SNP typing assay developed here interrogates 12 informative SNPs in gnd.

Each regulated STEC serogroup contained multiple gnd SNP types distinct from SNP genotypes belonging to other serogroups.

The assay represents a rapid high-throughput alternative to conventional serogrouping for surveillance and epidemiological investigations.
