Si increases austenitization temperature for solid solution strengthened steel. Solid solution strengthening improves resistance to WEL formation for wheel steel. WEL remarkably reduces the rolling contact fatigue life of wheel steel. Spalling resistance of wheel steel is improved by solid solution strengthening.
