The mechanisms of ground movements in flat and mountainous terrains were explained. The mechanisms of subsidence in sloping terrains was investigated. The Distinct Element Method was used to investigate the mechanisms of mining induced escarpment failure at Nattai North. The study showed that the mechanisms of mining subsidence depends on the surface topography.
