The design of model experiments for melt flow and phase change is described. A setup for the use of GaInSn and gallium as model substances is presented. A newly developed US Array Doppler Velocimeter is used for flow measurements. Test experiments on GaInSn flow and gallium solidification are presented. The developed setup provides good similarity to industrial growth of mc-Si ingots.
