Cheap plastic syringes served well as batch reactors in mass screening tests. Gas producing cultures were monitored by simply recording volume expansion. Inocula could be standardized by using moving bed biofilm carriers or granules. Denitrification was screened successfully comparing substrates as well as inocula. Biogas formation was screened successfully, up to a month by removing excess gas.
