The cation permeability of SPEEK scales with the cross-link density Ultra-low permeability is achieved with anion conducting and amphoteric membranes containing sulfammonium groups. An important effect of the polymer backbone is demonstrated in addition to the kind of grafted ionic group. A factor of merit, defined as ratio of ion conductivity and ion permeability, is introduced to characterize the membranes.
