Liquefaction of sweet sorghum stalk in supercritical methanol was investigated.

The maximum yield of bio-oil with high HHV was obtained at 300 °C for 30 min.

Phenolic compounds and esters are predominant in the bio-oils.

Esters variation mainly relied on LCME and SCME change with varied reaction conditions.
