Biochar was activated using microwave, carbon dioxide or superheated steam. The biochar surface area (SSA) subjected to the activations improved significantly. Activation with superheated steam caused the greatest increase in the SSA. The activation caused an increase of the effectiveness of immobilisation of PAHs.
