Environmental O2 concentrations were found to influence myogenesis in vitro.
Proliferation of primary muscle cells was increased when cells were grown in 6% O2.
Cells grown in 20% O2 showed increased RONS formation compared with cells in 6% O2.
Cells grown in 20% O2 had higher antioxidant defence enzyme contents.
These data suggest that RONS generated at 20% O2 may limit myogenesis in vitro.
