We simulate the operation of rock cavern for thermal energy storage for 30 years.

Coupled thermal-hydrological-mechanical processes within the rock mass are presented.

Evaporation and multiphase flow showed a minor effect on mechanical stability.

Thermal expansion led to a ground surface uplift and tensile stress development.

Tangential stress near the cavern can cause some shear failure and local damage.
