Assessment of heat shock and laboratory virus challenges to selectively breed for ostreid herpesvirus 1 (OsHV-1) resistance in the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas
This paper tests two ways of evaluating Pacific oyster resistance to OsHV-1 in selective breeding programs. Heat shock has no useful genetic correlation with on-farm survival of Pacific oysters subjected to OsHV-1. Laboratory-based challenges are a reasonable proxy for on-farm survival of Pacific oysters at sites infected with OsHV-1 This laboratory-based challenge protocol is also useful for studying how environmental factors influence OsHV-1 Pacific oyster interactions.
