Soil–water–vegetation system was investigated in a drying-out alkaline sodic wetland.

Alterations of habitats, species composition and soil desalinization were recognised.

The rate of change reflects degradation beyond the natural dynamics of vegetation.

The main driving factor of desalinization process is water shortage.

Annual salt pioneer swards and Puccinellia swards became highly threatened.
