The use of electrokinetic geocomposites was tested for the consolidation of oil sands mature fine tailings (MFT). Efficient dewatering was obtained under 20 kPa normal stress and electro-osmosis. MFT shear strength improved from nearly 0 kPa to a mean value of 25 kPa. The energy required was 10.6 kW h per dry tonne.
