Changes in tarsal morphology and attachment ability to rough surfaces during ontogenesis in the beetle Gastrophysa viridula (Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae)
Larvae of G. viridula leaf beetles attach to substrates with smooth pretarsal pads. Adults attach to the same host plant with setal (“hairy”) pretarsal pads. Adults generate higher attachment forces, but are more affected by surface roughness. The larval system especially supports stationary attachment and rapid growth. The adult system supports diverse behaviors that demand increased locomotion.
