In order to apply high strength steels to automotive parts, the effects of strengthening mechanisms on the fatigue properties of the ferrite-bainite steel containing retained austenite, the ferrite-martensite dual-phase steel and the Nb containing steel were studied. The following results are obtained: (1) The fatigue limit and fatigue strength at 500 000 cycles of the steel containing retained austenite are superior to those of the ferrite-martensite dual-phase steel and the Nb containing steel. (2) The steel containing retained austenite has higher resistance to cyclic softening than the ferrite-martensite dual-phase steel and the Nb containing steel. (3) These results indicate that the compressive residual stress caused by martensitic transformation under the cyclic load retard the propagation of the micro-cracks.
