After adjusting for patient, intraoperative and postoperative variables which significantly affect superficial and deep incisional surgical site infection rates, there was no effect of alcohol-based hand rub implementation on infection rates. Surgical hand antisepsis may be performed with an alcohol-based hand rub without affecting superficial and deep incisional surgical site infection rates compared to traditional aqueous surgical scrubs.
