We identify and characterize a previously unknown active fault in Western Iberia.
The Eastern Lower Tagus Valley Fault Zone exhibits left-lateral strike-slip movement.
The fault is 70 km long and may produce maximum magnitudes ~ Mw 7.3.
The minimum slip rate is on the order of 0.14–0.24 mm/yr.
A mean recurrence rate for surface ruptures around 1.7 ka is estimated for the past 10 ka.
