Egg white-encapsulated gold nanoclusters were rapidly synthesized by microwave-assisted method. The AuNCs@ew-Hg(II) system can be successfully applied for tumor cells recognition for the first time. The AuNCs@ew can be used for patterning, staining and temperature sensing.
