The first post-17 ka tephra framework for the Afar (northern Ethiopia) is presented. A database of glass compositions for 21 tephras is provided. Eruptions occurred from potentially seven volcanic centres at a frequency of <1000 years. This tephrostratigraphy can be used to provide information of the timing of future volcanic events in northern Ethiopia.
