With the world’s auto industry facing continually esclalating levels of competition, a more “global” approach is seen as an essential element of profitability, if not outright survival. Globalization and innovation have long since formed part of Fiat Auto’s strategy for growth but as the millenium approaches, new and more complex challenges lie ahead both for vehicle manufacturers and increasingly, suppliers. Today, the component is more of a “module” than simply an individual item and so it follows that the supplier must then also become a systems engineer. This integration between car makers and suppliers further encourages solutions from the supplier, a factor clearly illustrated by Fiat Auto’s “178 world car Project”, Palio. The world car concept creates both challenges and opportunities in abundance but suppliers expanding to become a global player must not be too hasty. Should it be necessary for suppliers to follow manufacturers around the world and what benefits and costs does such globalization present to manufacturers and their suppliers? All these factors and more are evolving at great speed.
