One-atom-layer 4×4 compound in (Tl, Pb)/Si(111) system

Upon Pb deposition onto Si(111)1×1-Tl surface, Pb atoms substitute Tl. When about 0.7 ML Pb is adsorbed, 2D Si(111)4×4-(Tl, Pb) compound is formed. The compound plausibly contains 9 Tl atoms and 12 Pb atoms per 4×4 unit cell. Based on DFT calculations, model of the 4×4-(Tl, Pb) structure is proposed. The structure has a C3 symmetry and occurs in the two equivalent orientations.
