Zygopetalum mackayi is a food-deceptive, pollinator-dependent, orchid. Crossed flowers produced more viable monoembryonic seeds than selfed ones. Apomixis occurs in this species, but reproduction is mainly sexual. Self-pollinated flowers set more apomictic non-viable seeds. Apomixis may compensate for inbreeding depression.
