Severity of dengue virus (DENV) infection correlates with high viral load and massive cytokine production.

Ribavirin (RV) and compound A (CpdA) were tested in DENV-infected A549 cells.

RV significantly reduced DENV production, cytokine (IL-6 and TNF-alpha) and chemokine (IP-10, and RANTES) transcription.

CpdA significantly reduced cytokine/chemokine (IL-6, TNF-alpha, and RANTES) transcription.

Combined RV and CpdA treatment resulted in greater reduction of DENV production and cytokine/chemokine transcription.
