Food asphyxia is a common problem whenever and wherever people eat.

The glutinous texture of mochi is believed to predispose this food to becoming lodged in the throat, leading to fatal asphyxia.

Postmortem computed tomography is expected to be an effective tool for suggesting death of asphyxiation due to food such as rice cakes.
