Impact of the 2011 tsunami on the Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum population and subsequent population recovery in Matsukawa-ura Lagoon, Fukushima, northeastern Japan
Substantial impact of huge tsunami on a infaunal bivalve species was documented. Natural recovery process of the clam population after the tsunami was also assessed. Most of the clams could not survive the tsunami especially in smaller individuals. Tsunami surviving large clams contributed to reproduction shortly after the tsunami. Rapid population recovery indicates high increase potential of the species.
