An empirical analysis of trade-related redistribution and the political viability of free trade

We examine voting behavior on 11 US Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) since 1998.

Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) generosity affects Congressional voting behavior.

More generous TAA increases representative propensity to vote in favor of FTAs.

Nine of eleven FTAs in our sample would have still passed in the absence of TAA.

However, TAA is more influential in situations where one would expect.
