Chicken embryo neural retinas transdifferentiate into lens in spreading cultures. Notch signal inhibition strongly enhances lens transdiffrentiation. Early lens genes, Prox1 and Pitx3, are activated and lens protein genes follow. Lens potential intrinsic to embryonic neural retinas is inhibited by Notch in vivo.
