Mullite formation and growth closely follow the changes in liquid phase present. Liquid phase composition and content can be predicted from the phase diagram. Faster heating rates slightly delay equilibrium but thwart grain growth. The phase diagram can be used to estimate the actual firing temperature. Best heat treatment for a desired microstructure suggested by the phase diagram.
